For the time being, I think I'll have this as an ID. It's just an amalgam of older pixel art I've done made to look like a standard part of the DA sidebar.
I wouldn't submit this as a deviation, but you have to in order to add it as an ID.
Edit: The site apparently already puts your ID in a bounding box. I was unaware of this, so my "clever" idea was for naught.
I hadn't had the the chance to look through all your pixel work, but the shading on some of these is amazing! Especially the black creature, though i kinda want it as a pet
The secret is not using pure black. The main color in that is actually deep purple. You can substitute blue or green or red or pretty much anything ('cept yellow, not sure how you'd pull that one off). Just make it dark enough to appear as if it were black.

Wow, i've always went with a shade of grey rather a really dark colour. And it definately looks black! If i ever get around to drawing something so dark, i'll try out what you said ^^
